Distractions To A Minimum
Whether I’m taking pictures of friends, my dogs, travel, a model, or a movie star, my goal is to make the process as simple as possible, and to keep my distractions to a minimum. While on set of a campaign shoot a few weeks ago, I was having a conversation with the talent, and he asked me how I got into photography. A question I’ve been asked before but never really gave serious thought to.
Andrew Garfield. Vanity Fair - Oscars - Beverly Hills.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon so I decided to take a walk to Alexandra Park, south of Manchester city centre. A cricket match was under way when I wandered through the park gates and I settled down near the boundary with an ice cream to watch. The batsmen were well on top and quite a few sixes and fours whizzed by. All the players looked Pakistani and as I lay there I listened to the waiting batsmen chatting in Urdu.
At four o’ clock forty overs were up, and six wickets were down for 256 runs....
For our 12th Behind The Film interview, we speak to Jonathan Osborn who is one of our scientists here at ILFORD.

My name is Jonathan Osborn and I am a Scientist at Harman. I am currently in my 25th year working at ILFORD. (Where did that time go!)

4th of July weekend
It all started with a single roll of 120 ILFORD HP5+ film and a Rolleiflex 3.5F over the Independence Day weekend which fell on a Monday this year. It was the Friday of that long holiday weekend and I loaded the roll of film in the Rolleiflex and took the camera for a ride to McIntosh Lake in Longmont Colorado (USA) in the hopes of finding worthwhile photo subjects. My goal was to find street portraits and storytelling photographs.
What it became over the next ten weeks is the Longmo...
Abstract Concepts
Often times, I come up with ethereal and abstract concepts for my artwork. However, I noticed that my techniques and skills in the darkroom did not match up to my artistic output. Which is such a shame. I wanted to do something about it. It is like having the urge to do a back flip but not having the progressed workouts to help you get there.
My name is Zain Al Khalifa, I use film photography as a base for my artwork. I like darkroom printing and I wanted to share an experience with yo...
The Young Family
In a small town in Russia, a couple became the parents of a baby girl. The young family embarked on a journey, forced to address the couple's relationship, parenting, a new economic life, difficulty, and the struggle for survival. They decide to begin a new life. They sit in a library, explore an old globe to search for a better place to continue the dream from which they were created, seeking a place close to earth, mountains, water, and sky.

Wednesday Afternoon
I remember the message on Instagram from Clare one wet Wednesday afternoon whilst I was halfway through my maternity leave… “Julie & I are getting married on Sunday, any chance you’re free?!” I was absolutely thrilled to get to shoot Clare & Julie’s wedding day and knew they’d make it absolutely their own. They had just 4 guests (their two best friends and their two sisters) and it was such a special and beautifully intimate day.

'What are you doing?'
After 25 years it still catches me off guard. Because my work happens in public spaces, the answer comes often and without pause. Men walking by the scene will change direction and make their way to within a meter of my tripod. While to me it is evidently clear, to the viewers it is understandably strange. For my portraits of girls in rural India, this is supremely true. To set the scene, we are using medium format gear mounted on a tripod, speaking with the children being photographe...

Community Of Male Bathers
Lanterna “Beach” is a long-term project (2015-2022) that documents a community of male bathers in a town in Southern Italy, where I was born and raised, before leaving my country. The work explores the relationship between this peculiar community and the nature of the Pier where they sunbathe...
It makes us so happy that you enjoy shooting ILFORD FP4+ as much as we, as you demonstrated for this week's #ilfordphoto #fridayfavourites theme being #madewithfp4.
@JeremyCalow. One of my favourite shots with FP4+ “The Crew” #ilfordphoto #fridayfavourites #madewithfp4
@kostamuksendee. #ilfordphoto #fridayfavourites #madewithfp4. I feel nostalgic sharing these FP4+ photos of Helsinki summer. This is when we would enjoy bathing in the sun (but in shades of course), before diving into...
