How I Got This Picture - Sebastian

FIRSTLY, TELL US THE STORY BEHIND THIS IMAGE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO SHOOT IT?

I have been to this place and especially the Dolomites already 2 times. So, I knew what I could expect from this place photography wise on my 3rd visit. After shooting mainly with a wide-angle lens I wanted to have more compression in my images to isolate these lovely cabins and trees. Therefore, I brought a Nikkor Zoom lens on this hike. Another important factor, and I knew this way before the trip, I wanted to push HP5 2 stops in development to increase the amount of beautiful rough grain in the negatives. So I shot this roll underexposed at 1600 ASA.

DID YOU COME ACROSS ANY CHALLENGES?

To be honest, everything went very well on this hike. Of course, I was hoping for a bright day with good lighting, which in my eyes, was the perfect combo with the pulled film of ILFORD.

WHAT PROCESS DID YOU USE?

As I hoped for, it was a bright day, so no tripod was needed. Luckily. The focal length on my Tele- Zoom was roughly about 105mm. Exposure time was 1/500 with a f-stop of 8. Thanks to the 1600 asa. I typically don’t use any filters except a UV filter to protect the front element of the lens.

HOW DID YOU PROCESS IT?

I shot a lot of rolls in the Dolomites, which would have led to a time-consuming home development part. Therefore, I sent all my rolls to urbanfilmlab here in Germany for processing. Of course, I told them for this specific roll of HP5 to push it 2 stops in development. After receiving the negatives, I scanned all of them myself with a DSLR scanning setup. Some retouching later in Lightroom I was very happy with the results.

WHAT ABOUT PRINTING?

Yes, I had this plan immediately. Unfortunately, our walls at home are already quite full. Need to swap things out first.

WHICH PAPER DID YOU USE AND WHAT WAS YOUR PRINTING PROCESS?

Not there yet.
