Developing black and white film with Kentmere Film processing chemicals
Developing your films with our Kentmere range of chemicals is very straighforward. If this is your first time developing film or, if you just need a refresher then check out this short video on our ILFORD Photo YouTube channel first. Or, for a more in depth look this video will be helpful.
- Kentmere Film Developer is designed to be used at 1:9 dilution.
- This means for a 300ml spiral tank you will need to measure 30ml of concentrate and mix with 270 ml of water at the desired temperature and stir thoroughly before adding it to your tank.
- Agitation - Invert the tank 4 times during the first 10 seconds of your development time and then repeat for the first 10 seconds of each subsequent minute. Make sure that you tap your tank firmly on the workbench after each agitation sequence to dislodge any air bubbles.
- Remove your film from your tank about 10 seconds before the end of your development time and then immediately fill your tank with your next solution.
More detailled instructions can be found on the Kentmere Film Developer technical data sheet.
After this step use our Kentmere Stop Bath
Kentmere Stop Bath
We recommend using a stop bath after development for best reults. This will immediately stop development and reduce carry over of excess developer into the fixer bath, helping to maintain the activity and prolong the life of the fixer solution.
- Kentmere Stop Bath should be mixed 1:9
Film
- For a 300ml spiral tank you will need to measure 30ml of concentrate and mix with 270 ml of water at the desired temperature and stir thoroughly before adding it to your tank.
- Agitate for around 10 seconds before pouring out your stop bath and moving on to our Kentmere Film and Paper Fixer
Paper
- To make up 1lt of working strength solution measure 100ml of concentrate and mix with 900ml of water at the desired temperature, then stir thoroughly before adding it to your tray
- Once paper has been developed and is in your stop bath solution, rock the tray gently from side to side for 20 seconds before moving it to the tray containing Kentmere Film and Paper Fixer
Kentmere Film and Paper Fixer
Kentmere Film and Paper Fixer is normally used at 1+9 dilution.**
Film
- For a 300ml spiral tank you will need to measure 30ml of concentrate and mix with 270 ml of water at the desired temperature and stir thoroughly before adding it to your tank.
- Agitation - Invert the tank 4 times during the first 10 seconds of your development time and then repeat for the first 10 seconds of each subsequent minute. Make sure that you tap your tank firmly on the workbench after each agitation sequence to dislodge any air bubbles.
- Pour your fixer out and wash your film
** To prevent excessively long fix times for ILFORD Delta films an alternative dilution of 1+4 is recommended
Paper
- To make up 1lt if you are processing paper then measure 10ml of concentrate and mix with 900 ml of water at the desired temperature and stir thoroughly before adding it to your tray
- Fix your paper for 2 minutes (RC) or 5 minutes (FB)
- Wash your paper.
Wash
For spiral tanks, after fixing, fill the spiral tank with water at the same temperature, +/– 5ºC (9ºF), as the processing solutions and invert it five times. Drain the water away and refill. Invert the tank ten times. Once more drain the water away and refill. Finally, invert the tank twenty times and drain the water away.
For paper wash in fresh running water for 2 minutes
Developing Paper with Kentmere Paper Processing chemicals

- Pour the required amount of monobath into your tank
- Agitation. - Invert the tank four times during the first 10 seconds then invert twice for each subsequent minute of development **Do not over agitate – Over agitation will increase the fixing rate and reduce the apparent film speed.**
- At the end of the processing sequence, tap the tank firmly on the work bench to dislodge any air bubbles.
- Drain off the monobath and return to the stock solution for re-use.
For development times and more detailled instructions see the Kentmere Monobath technical data sheet.
