Interview number 9 in our Community Focus series takes us to Amsterdam in the Netherlands where we chatted with Analog Club Amsterdam.
Tell us A little about the darkroom, what it’s called and how it started.
Well as we are situated in Amsterdam the darkroom is known as Analog Club Amsterdam open doka. Doka is a dutch abbreviation for Darkroom. And ACA Doka is a collaboration with MK24 which is an art institute in Amsterdam. MK24 has different analog courses and analog printing is one of the courses. During the weekend the darkroom at the art institute is not in use and I have made a proposal back in 2019 to manage the darkroom during the weekend. This how the Analog Club Amsterdam open doka started.
De Analog Club Amsterdam Open Doka is een samenwerking met MK24, een kunstinstituut in Amsterdam. MK24 geeft verschillende analoge cursussen, waaronder analoog printen. In het weekend wordt de doka van MK24 niet gebruikt voor cursussen. In 2019 heb ik een voorstel gedaan om de doka in het weekend te beheren. Zo is de ACA Open Doka ontstaan. De naam Analog Club Amsterdam is in 2016 ontstaan omdat ik van plan was een analoog festival te organiseren. Maar het is vooralsnog gebleven bij analoge fotografie.

What is the best piece of printing tip or advice you have ever received?
For making test strips use the F-stop printing method. As a photographer it is more easy to think in amount of light / f-stops.
Een van de betere adviezen die ik heb gekregen heeft te maken met het maken van teststrips. De tip kwam van Douwe (een ACA-lid), die aangaf bij het maken van teststrips gebruik te maken van de F-stopmethode. Als fotograaf is het namelijk makkelijker om in lichtstops of f-stops te denken.
Where are you based?
In Amsterdam the Netherlands at Mauritskade 24 near a subway station
De doka is in Amsterdam, Nederland, aan de Mauritskade 24, vlak bij metrostation Weesperplein.
What facilities do you have? How many enlargers etc.
Well at the moment we have 12 Durst enlargers, mainly the models Durst M601 and Durst M605. We also have what we call the beast and that’s the Durst 1200. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing the beast is in his cage.
We have a dedicated wet part and a mobile wet part. The darkroom consists of 2 floors. To dry analog printers there is a heat press which makes use of rollers. And of course the equipment to make a proper analog print, like focus finders, easels, light-table, scissors etc. And the chemicals for printing and developing
For developing film we have around 20 developing tanks, all necessary measuring cylinders and a dedicated drying cabinet.
What I always ask the members to bring are 3 things
- their own negatives
- their own darkroom paper
- a good mood
Op dit moment hebben we twaalf Durst-vergroters, voornamelijk de modellen Durst M601 en M605. Daarnaast hebben we ‘het beest’, de Durst 1200. Helaas zit het beest momenteel in z’n kooi en is het niet operationeel.
We hebben een vaste en een mobiele natte ruimte. De doka is verder verdeeld over twee verdiepingen. Voor het drogen van prints hebben we een warmtepers met rollers. Natuurlijk is alle standaardapparatuur aanwezig: focusfinders, maskers, lichttafels, scharen, enzovoort. Ook zijn de chemische middelen voor ontwikkelen en printen aanwezig. Voor filmontwikkeling hebben we ongeveer twintig ontwikkeltanks, alle benodigde maatbekers en een speciale droogkast.
Wat ik leden altijd vraag mee te nemen naar een doka-avond, zijn drie dingen:
● Eigen negatieven
● Eigen (Ilford) papier
● En een goed humeur

Who can use the space?
Everybody who has experience with analog darkroom printing and is an ACA member. Most of the people approach me through instagram or they have done an analog course at MK24
Iedereen met ervaring in analoog printen én die lid is van ACA. De meeste mensen nemen contact op via Instagram of hebben een cursus bij MK24 gevolgd. Mensen die nog geen doka-ervaring hebben, verwijs ik door naar de analoge fotografiecursussen van MK24.
What’s the best way for people to get in touch with you?
The best way to get in touch is through instagram at the moment and whatsapp if you have my number. Instagram is so far the best way to reach the expats and internationally people who live and work here in Amsterdam.
Via Instagram is het het makkelijkst om me te bereiken, en via WhatsApp als je mijn nummer hebt. Instagram is vooral handig om expats en internationals in Amsterdam te bereiken.
What can they expect when they visit and so they need any experience to come along?
Well there will be at least 3 members printing during a session and I will always be there to assist and to help members out. The members do need to have some darkroom experience and sometimes it has been a while since a member has made an analog print. But I am there to help out and it's just like riding a bicycle. People remember how to do it.
Er zijn meestal minstens drie mensen tegelijk aan het printen, en ik ben er altijd bij om te helpen en te assisteren. Je moet wel wat ervaring hebben, ook al is het soms al even geleden dat iemand heeft geprint. Maar ik help je op weg — het is net als fietsen, je verleert het niet echt.
Do you charge a membership or any fees?
Yes, membership is €40 per 6 months to be part of the whatsapp group and €15 per 3 hours session which is a fee for the art institute.
Ja, lidmaatschap kost €40 per halfjaar, waarmee je ook in de WhatsApp-groep komt. Per sessie van drie uur betaal je €15; dat is een bijdrage aan het kunstinstituut.

Why should people come along?
Well Analog Club Amsterdam is a still growing community of analog photography lovers. I organize an analog event once every 2 months which in general is a photowalk with something extra (presentations, workshops, surprising location - Shout out to Huis Marseille, an amazing photography museum in Amsterdam - or screening like the movie Smoke at LAB111).
During every ACA event I create a temporary whatsapp group and for those who like the vibe I add them to the permanent whatsapp group. And during my strolls in Amsterdam, as I do like to wander the streets and take photos with my Yashica T5, Leica M2 and HP5 ;), I regularly come across film shooters and I invite them to the darkroom and add them to the whatsapp group.
Analog Club Amsterdam is een groeiende community van mensen die van analoge fotografie houden. Elke twee maanden organiseer ik een analoog event, meestal een fotowandeling met iets extra’s (presentaties, workshops, verrassende locatie — shout-out naar Huis Marseille! — of een filmvertoning zoals Smoke bij LAB111).
Tijdens zo'n event maak ik een tijdelijke WhatsApp-groep en mensen die het leuk vinden voeg ik daarna toe aan de vaste groep.

Are there any darkroom printers that you admire?
From the past I like the prints made by Ansel Adams and as I am personally a fan of Daido Moriyama I like his prints (not sure how long he printed himself).
Ik ben zelf een groot fan van Daido Moriyama; ik vind zijn werk erg raw en mooi (al weet ik niet of hij alles zelf heeft geprint). Wat techniek betreft zijn de prints van Ansel Adams uitmuntend.

Paulie B as photography channel and I have watched a bunch more in the past. But I stopped as I rather stroll the streets myself instead of watching videos.
Darkroom related TheNakedPhotographer, shout out Brendan Barry (what’s in a name ;p) and the one studio darkroom setup that I would like to visit is the darkroom setup of talented New York based Andrew D. Wagner.

As this is an ILFORD interview it would be remiss of us not to ask about your favourite ILFORD darkroom products.
My go to darkroom paper is ILFORD - pearl - Multigrade V RC Deluxe 17,8x24 cm and when I have some spare money I print on Multigrade Fiber Warmtone paper.
Besides using ILFORD’s paper I am also using Delta 100/400 a lot next to HP5 and during an experimental project I still have some 20meter of bulkfilm, expired Ilford Surveillance Film 400 P4.
Mijn go-to papier is Ilford Multigrade V RC Deluxe Pearl 17,8x24 cm. Als ik wat extra budget heb, print ik graag op Multigrade Fiber Warmtone. Qua film gebruik ik veel Ilford Delta 100/400 en natuurlijk HP5.
Voor een experimenteel project gebruik ik nog steeds een bulkrol van 20 meter Ilford Surveillance Film 400 P4 (verlopen, maar spannend spul!).

Barry van Weldam
My name is Barry van Weldam and my love for photography started when I saw some of Daido Moriyama’s work at the Reflex Gallery here in Amsterdam. From that moment on, photography became one of the art forms I truly appreciated. I’ve always been fascinated by the process of shooting and printing photos.
After spending two decades behind a computer, I finally gave in and picked up analog photography again in 2016—and returned to the darkroom as well. For me, analog photography is about embracing the process and finding beauty in imperfection.
I realized I wasn’t the only one who felt this way, which led me to start a club to build a community around it. Eventually, I had the chance to manage a fully equipped darkroom with 12 enlargers, giving Analog Club Amsterdam a proper home base.
Since 2023, I’ve also been teaching an analog photography course at the art institute MK24 called Experimental Darkroom. Like many photographers, I plan to release a zine and co-organize a group exhibition with other ACA members in 2025 (9framesgallery.com).
To focus more on my personal work, I’m currently looking for someone who has a spare 5–10m² space with access to running water where I can set up my own enlarger.
Mijn naam is Barry van Weldam en mijn liefde voor fotografie begon toen ik werk van Daido Moriyama zag bij de Reflex Gallery van Alex Daniels, hier in Amsterdam. Vanaf dat moment was fotografie een kunstvorm waarin ik me echt kon verliezen.
Na twintig jaar achter een computer te hebben gezeten, heb ik in 2016 eindelijk de stap gezet om weer analoog te gaan fotograferen — en terug te keren naar de doka. Voor mij gaat analoge fotografie over het proces omarmen en schoonheid vinden in imperfectie.
Ik merkte dat ik niet de enige was die er zo over dacht, en besloot daarom een club op te richten om een community op te bouwen. Uiteindelijk kreeg ik de kans om een volledig uitgeruste doka te beheren met twaalf vergroters, waardoor ACA een echte thuisbasis kreeg.
Sinds 2023 geef ik ook een cursus analoge fotografie bij MK24: Experimental Darkroom.
Verder ben ik, zoals veel fotografen, bezig met een zine en samen met andere ACA-leden organiseer ik in 2025 een groepsexpositie onder 9framesgallery.com.
En mochten er bedrijven of mensen in Amsterdam dit lezen en een ruimte over hebben waar ik mijn persoonlijke vergroter kan neerzetten en gebruiken, dan hoor ik dat graag 😉 5–10 m2 met stromend water is genoeg.
