Summer of Photograms
My end goal with my photography, at least for as long as I can remember, was to make darkroom prints. I love the thought processes in darkroom printing, the excitement when I manage to find the combination of burning, dodging and other printing techniques that turns my imagined image into a print that I can share. Preferring the tactile nature of darkroom craft, I never cottoned on to digital photo processing or printing.
Then in the spring of 2019 I developed a long term illness th...
Earlier this year my go-to black and white film of choice had its priced hiked astronomically, making it an un-affordable option for my daily choice. I set about exploring some different options, which included revisiting HP5 (a film, I must confess heretically that I have never gelled with), pushing FP4 to 400, Foma 400 and 200 pushed, and - the film for this short piece - ILFORD’s XP2.
I might not have even reached for a roll of XP2 had I not discovered the experiments of another analogue photogr...

There’s a few I could post that I feel encapsulate the sort of feeling or thought process I have when I’m working on photos, but for me, so far? It’s this image.
Photography means a lot of di...

My Darkroom
I have always liked the quote of the master printer Ansel Adams “Photography is like music, the negative is the score and the print is its performance”.
Every performance is different. That’s so true, the prints I do now I are often different from the ones I did a few years ago. Better technique, more experience perhaps, but more likely my mood and interpretation of the image has changed.
Good advice
When I was starting my photographic practice I used to buy my ILFORD materials...

This is a tricky one to answer. Narrowing it down is nigh on impossible.

I like this one because when you look at the photo you see a boat surrounded by white like milk, water. Although in fact it was taken at night. I decided I would leav...

365 Days
A year is a period of time. It is 365 days. There have been many renditions of the calendar throughout human history, but it wasn't until 1582, when Pope Gregory pointed out a flaw in Julius Caesar's calendar, when we would receive our current amalgamation of determining time, the Gregorian calendar. Pope Gregory pointed out a problem. Julius Caesar’s calendar had drifted a full 10 days off. It wasn’t until the eighteenth century, that the Gregorian calendar was fully accepted throughout Europ...
