James Thomson
James is a Documentary Photography student at the University of Wales, Newport, who formerly studied photography at Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridgeshire. Over the past two years James has taken his camera to many different countries including Nepal, Malaysian, Borneo and New Zealand. He recently returned from a trip to Eastern Europe visiting Romania, Serbia and Kosovo with over 40 HP5 films in his bag to get stuck into. He plans to go back to Kosovo to develop a project as part of his course next year, already looking to put the product prize of £350 worth of ILFORD products to good use.
James found out he had won the competition soon after returning from his trip. "It was really pleasing to win the competition with a photograph taken on my back door step. Every time I come back from abroad now I realise how unique and beautiful Britain's landscape and people are".
James's winning entry is entitled "Depths of Spring". The Judges, who were unanimous in their selection of the winning image, were particularly impressed with the composition, atmosphere and movement of the water captured in this shot. "It was from a story I had been photographing of a horse breeder called Gordon Bailey. He was losing his farm out in the Fens. Before freeing them from their familiar winter stables for the last time, he had been arguing with his wife Pat all day, but when they came out of the water all of that just stopped"
Right now James says he is only comfortable using HP5 and DELTA 3200 films because of their flexibility and reliability "you know that when you put an HP5 in the camera that you're going to get quality results. I don’t know of another film that has that kind of reliability” he says. In addition to the product prize he also wins a two-day workshop with renowned photographer Andrew Sanderson http://www.andrewsanderson.com. An admirer of Andrew's work, James says the chance to learn directly from someone of his experience has come at the right time "there are some amazing photographers out there dedicated to exploring the capabilities of black and white, eg the Australian Trent Parke, who makes pictures so incredibly different and dynamic. I want to know more, and this is a good opportunity to do that."
James has recently developed a website http://www.jrthomson.co.uk where you can view his work.

James’ comments after his workshop with Andrew Sanderson
“Andrew has a very methodical approach to everything he does, which I admire and hope to take on board if I am to achieve the kind of consistent quality he is renowned for. I was lucky enough to stay with his family in Holmfirth and spent a lot of time looking through his collection of books and his own work, discussing different styles and approaches - which was invaluable. We also made some portraits using an old 5x7in plate camera with x-ray film which was definitely an experience! It was a really interesting few days”.

David Tipper
David Tipper is 27 years old and currently working as a Photographic Technician at Barton Peveril College in Hampshire whilst training to teach AS level Photography. David has been inspired by photography for as long as he can remember and loves working with both traditional and modern forms of imaging. His favourite subjects are without question the natural landscape and portraiture, images of which he has exhibited in galleries around Southern England. His future photographic plans include teaching, experimenting and one day taking a Masters Degree in Photographic Printing. He enjoys using ILFORD products because of their continued and consistent quality.

Adele Downing
Adele is a mature student at the Upper Bann Institute in Northern Ireland studying for an HND in Photography. Although she has been interested in photography for many years, it is only in the last 2 years that she has discovered the beauty of black and white photography and the excitement of working in the darkroom. She says “to watch an image appear in the developer still amazes me every time I see it”. She has a particular interest in photographing children, especially on location while they are in play mode and less aware of the camera. Her winning shot is that of her neighbour’s son. Her equipment includes a Nikon F80 with various lenses but she has recently started working in medium format with a Bronica ETRSi and thinks she has found the ideal camera for her. She states that she only uses ILFORD products while photographing and printing because she can always rely on the quality of the outcome and that she uses every day as an opportunity to learn something new and “always try to keep and open mind as well as open eyes”

ILFORD PHOTO HP5 Plus Film Challenge Competition (North America)

*****WINNERS***** *****WINNERS***** *****WINNERS*****

ILFORD PHOTO is proud to announce the winner and runners-up of the ILFORD HP5 Plus Challenge, which took place earlier this year. Entrants from North America entered the competition to have their winning black and white photograph printed on the front of an ILFORD MULTIGRADE IV RC box.

The judges of the HP5 Plus Challenge, including Frish Brandt, Director of the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, California (http://www.fraenkelgallery.com/) and Dennis Keeley, Chair of the Photography and Imaging Department at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California were delighted with the extremely high standard of entrants.

Jon Shiu from Reedley, California took first place with his amazing image, ‘Highway 1’.

1st Prize - Highway 1 by Jon Shiu
As first place winner, Jon will have his image printed on special edition ILFORD MULTIGRADE IV RC boxes and will receive a cash prize of $1,250. Jon Shiu commented on his recent success:
“I am absolutely thrilled to have won first place. It is quite encouraging to get recognition of my work and this inspires me to continue. The ILFORD HP5 Plus film is a great product to work with because of its beautiful tonality and sharpness. It is also so easy and predictable to process.”

With over 15 years experience in the industry, Jon only began showing and selling his work in the last three years. He continued: “I have taken darkroom workshops with Bill Scott and Per Volquartz – both are very fine photographers located in California. Masters, such as Edward Weston, Minor White and Ansel Adams have also inspired me with their formal styles. Most recently, I have turned my attention to studying Lee Friedlander and Stephen Shore as I like the unexpected details, juxtapositions and movement in their work and hope to emulate some of those qualities in my own work.”

The second prize has been awarded to Alex Wasilewski from Springfield, Illinois and his image ‘A Record in Stone’.

2nd Prize - A Record in Stone by Alex Wasilewski
Alex is currently attending Southern Illinois University where he is a Photo Major and is actively involved with the photo program. Alex attended the Society of Photographic Education’s national conference this past March. He is also the president of his photo club at school. Receiving a cash prize of $500, he explained:
“I was delighted to be a finalist and really pleased I entered. My teachers, including Gary Kolb, Chair of the Photo Program and Daniel Overturf, black and white photo instructor at SIU introduced me to ILFORD PHOTO products and I now really enjoy using them.

Black and White photography is such a niche market but a wonderful medium to work with. I find it just as compelling as working with color, and the ILFORD PHOTO black and white photography products are great to achieve a perfect look.”

Charity Rae Burger from Ithaca, New York took third place in the competition with her image, ‘The First Notes of a Music Box’, winning $250.

The First Notes of a Music Box by Charity Rae Burger
Charity commented of her achievement:
“Being chosen as a winner in this contest is an exciting experience in my journey as a photographer. It is encouraging to be recognized and to be given the opportunity to share the ideas and moments in life that stir me.”

Charity majored in photography at Edinboro University, Pennsylvania and since then has continued to experiment with her art and photography to further progress her work. Charity added:
“There are many artists that inspire me from Robert Rauschenberg to Sally Mann, helping me to push my passion in photography further. I am also very honoured that Frish Brandt and Dennis Keeley have recognized my work through this competition”
