Posted - 13/09/2005 : 05:21:44 Hi,
I'd like to do some interior portraits and I realized that the house I am living in is pretty dark and I am looking for some nice lighting.
I already have the 60' white umbrella, remote control for the canon flash, white/silver reflector + 2x420EX. I am thinking about the upgrading to canon 550EX flash (to get some manual control).
My question is: Is that flash powerfull enough to shoot through/with the umbrella for the full/half body shots? The desired minimal exposure is about F8, 1/200s, ISO400.
How far from the subject could I place the flash/umbrella to get my desired exposure?
Any practical experiences highly appreciated. Thanks, Stefan |

Posted - 13/09/2005 : 19:13:10 I have no experience with the Canon flash, but I would guess you may have trouble getting f8 at the distance needed to light a standing, full-length shot evenly. You'd need to do some tests to determine the proper flash-umbrella distance (so the flash fills the umbrella), and then additional tests to determine the umbrella-subject distance for even lighting. |

Posted - 13/09/2005 : 07:01:09 Hello Stefan - I used a single 550ex speedlite with an EOS3 for a few studio portraits that came out quite nice. I used the wirless transmitter - shooting through an embrella, with a reflector for fill. Very nice for outdoor portraits. I never tried using multiple speedlites. The only problem of course is that you don't have the benefit of a modeling light, as on a strobe. I used some simple lights in metal cans, but they generate a lot of heat.
It's a fun way to shoot, but if you can afford it I'd recommend investing in some good studio strobes. You won't regret it.
